Equality Party opens for members

Equality Party Leadership Team

The new Equality Party has opened for membership, having been approved and registered by the Electoral Commission to stand candidates in elections in England, Scotland and Wales.

The party has seen a rush of new members from all over the country, mostly ex-members of the Women’s Equality Party, which closed its doors at the end of December.

Party Leader, Congleton Town Councillor Kay Wesley, explained:

“Led by the US, we are seeing a relentless rollback of equality, diversity, and inclusion that is sending shockwaves across the globe. Many people are expressing alarm at this erosion of hard-won rights with the potential reversal of decades of progress.

“Fairness, justice and fundamental human rights are not optional extras – they should be at the centre of our democracy and society. This is what the Equality Party is all about and the need for such a political force has never been more urgent.”

The objectives of the Equality Party are

  • Equal representation across politics, industry, public and working life
  • Equal pay and opportunity, and equality in education and childcare
  • A sustainable economic model that prioritises the wellbeing of people and planet
  • Public services such as healthcare, social care and justice, that work for all, without discrimination
  • Media, arts and education that deliver fair and inclusive human stories
  • An end to gender-based and hate-motivated violence and abuse

The party is preparing to stand candidates in its first local elections in May 2025.

Anyone who would like to join the party, or learn more, can do so via its website www.equalityparty.org.uk.

The Party

The Equality Party was founded by 12 former members of the Women’s Equality Party to push women’s equality and equality for minoritised groups to the top of the political agenda.

The Party has two elected Councillors in Cheshire, both on Congleton Town Council. Another party member is a Community Councillor (non-political) in Edinburgh.
